Survival in tertiary institution is expensive, time consuming, and mentally taxing, well that’s part of the reason why, nearly 18% of Nigerian students who started as a fresher at universities or polytechnic ended up dropping out before graduation.

1. Being Broke (Empty Wallet)
Even those who came from the wealthiest lineages/family have their bank accounts tested by schools. School is expensive enough as it is, being broke is one of the frustration students get in school and being broke can make students starve and make them lose concentration in studying. and getting first job can be hard in Nigeria.
Be sure to check out some of the departments on campus, all of which are usually hiring around the start of the semester.
Also, remember some of the best jobs can come from connections you already have, so don’t be afraid to talk to your friends and acquaintances about any job opportunities they might know of.
2. Grades
One of the biggest causes of stress among students, the grades that you receive in school could haunt you for life. getting poor grades in school makes students frustrated either due to bad lecturer, starving and even keeping bad companies.
Maintaining a strong GPA is important, especially if you’re planning on attending post graduate school, but it should be achievable assuming you study at least 40 hours a week and it will make a student do well in every exam.

3. Getting Lost
If a University student attending school out of town or even out of state, there are chances that he/she will be pretty confused at first. because it may take some time to adapt to the new environment and adapting to new friends.
The best way the student can do is try to get outside, make friends, and explore your new home. Also bringing a map probably isn’t a bad idea either.
4. Bad Technology
We live in an increasingly digital world, and technology gives us infinite opportunities to learn and complete tasks in ways that weren’t possible before. Unfortunately, it is a double edged sword, and a faulty internet connection can delay or delete that essay you’ve spent the week working on.
It’s never a bad idea to save and backup your work when working on a computer and to check in to make sure the assignment was actually received by the course lecturer even if it was submitted over the internet.
5. Textbooks
After a student might have paid for his/ her tuition, accommodations, and food items. Students in Nigeria face that difficulties in trying to pay for Text books and hand-outs. Well there are some textbook that you’ll use once it could be a session or even a semester but is still required for your course.
There’s not actually a lot you can do to avoid this one, but if you take good care of your books, you may be able to sell them back at the end of the semester or session.
6. Roommates
Moving to a new home is hard enough as it is, but sharing a tiny living space with someone you have just met always has a chance to cause a little tension, especially sharing a room with a noisy students who like using gadgets during studying hours.
Luckily, most Nigeria tertiary institution have ways of matching people that share same interests, but there is always a chance that you’ll get stuck with someone you can’t stand.
If you can, try to reach out to your roommates and make friends before the semester begins. If you just don’t see things working out, there are usually ways for you to request a switch.

7. No Social Life
Many students struggle to balance their school and friends, and it can be very disappointing to miss a party or get together because of assignments and studying. Since nobody can really see the future, there is no for sure way to avoid conflicts between school and social life.
However, staying ahead of schoolwork can help make unexpected assignments less detrimental to your weekend plans.
8. Bad Lecturer
Having a bad lecturer in tertiary institution can be frustrating most times, every student knows the pain of having to deal with a bad lecturer. Whether they are constantly nagging you, way too strict, or just painfully boring, there is nothing quite like a bad lecturer to make you want to get up and walk out of class.
Just keep in mind that your lecturer are people too, and who knows, maybe your worst lecturer will end up being the one you learn the most from.
9. Managing Relationships
Relationships are hard to begin and they can be even harder especially when you’re young and in school. For a student trying to merge a bad relationship with studying in Nigeria can be very frustrating. Remember that, the kind of friendship you keep can as well determine the level of excellence.
Having close friends is also incredibly important for students, as having somebody to trust and confide in is very good for your emotional stability. Remember: open communication is the best foundation for a solid relationship.

10. Lack of Sleep
Whether you stayed up late cramming or studying for your next text or exam or just spent too long on the internet, chances are if you’re a student, you are struggling to get enough sleep.
Always try to maintain a pretty consistent schedule in both your sleep and daily activities, and definitely don’t pull an all-nighter right before an exam; you are much better off getting a good rest before an important test or exam.
